Anubis was the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife, as well as the patron deity of lost souls and helpless people. Anubis was the jackal-headed god who weighed people's hearts after they died and guarded souls in the underworld as they traveled to rebirth. Anubis acted as both a guardian and an arbiter during a person's death, with his numerous titles indicating that he oversaw everything. He stood duty as a just judge and guide over the soul even after death.
