Baphomet is a deity allegedly worshiped by the Knights Templar, which subsequently became incorporated into various occult and mystical beliefs. The term Baphomet appeared in Inquisition proceedings against the Knights Templar in 1307. It became widespread in English during the 19th century as part of a discussion and inquiry on the Templars' demise.
The name Baphomet has been linked to the "Sabbatic Goat" image drawn by Éliphas Lévi in 1856, which includes binary components representing "the symbolization of the equilibrium of opposites." Lévi's goal was to symbolize his concept of balance, which was crucial to his magnetic notion of the Astral Light.
